Wolfe Park in Monroe, Conn., where people fish in 2012 along Great Hollow Lake, will be the scene of two theater productions during the summer of 2015. The first, “Hairspray,” begins Thursday, July 23, 2015.

The Two Planks Theater Company is back for its second season at Wolfe Park in Monroe featuring the talents of young people from Monroe and Bridgeport.

The season opens with “Hairspray,” a family friendly musical on July 23, which will be followed by two more nights of performances. (Rain dates are July 26 and 27). The story features plenty of 1960s music and dance.

The group has been rehearsing since June and learning about theater from special guest professionals. The theater program, which is part of the Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Arts in the Park offerings, provides instruction on various disciplines.

The group also will stage “Avenue Q” from Aug. 6-8, with rain dates of Aug. 9 and 10. Just be warned, the production is a “funny, irreverent and bawdy musical,” which may not be appropriate for younger audiences. The shows begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 seniors and students. Visit here to purchase your tickets.

Attendees are welcome to bring along a picnic blanket and dine on the lawn.

The 2015 Arts in the Park schedule also includes musical group The Timmy Maia Experience, on July 31. Admission is free. Also, the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its 20th anniversary Character Dinner Series at Great Hollow Lake.

Tonight, Scooby Doo is expected to make an appearance, along with entertainment by Sam Blanchette. On Wednesday, July 29, it will be Batman, with entertainment by Les Julian. Fantasy Faces by Ruth and Clink the Clown will also be present. For more information, visit here.
